Passover is one of the major Jewish holidays and celebrates the escape of the Israelite slaves from Egypt. With that comes the opportunity to observe this holiday with loved ones, meaning you might find yourself in the kitchen concocting a feast that needs to feed many!
In order to help you get food on the table without causing your wallet any indigestion, we’ve put together a list of 11 recipes that will ensure your Passover is delicious and affordable.
Matzo Ball Soup
Matzo is the traditional unleavened bread served during Passover. It’s cracker like, light, and crispy. Using the matzo crumbs as the base for the dumplings in this delicious chicken soup, this recipe from The Kitchn even addresses one of Passover’s most debatable topics: dense vs. fluffy matzo dumplings.
Tzimmes
The ironic part of this dish is that “tzimmes” is a Yiddish word meaning something along the lines of “to make a big fuss”, however, this classic Ashkenazi Passover recipe is anything but fussy. Stewed carrots and dates come together to form an easy and yummy side.
Honey Ginger Salmon
Salmon is a great alternative to meat for your Passover meal. While salmon can be pricey, if you plan ahead and buy frozen, you can grab what you need when it’s on sale and save it for the holiday. The flavor in this recipe is amped up with tangy, bright, fresh ginger.
Ashkenazi Charoset
According to this recipe from The Spruce Eats, Charoset is an “integral part of the Passover Seder, [and] is a combination of fruit, nuts, spices, and wine meant to symbolize the mortar used by the enslaved Israelites in Egypt.” Served with matzo, it is a traditional part of the meal. It’s also great leftover served as a pairing with cheese.
Gefilte Fish
Another Passover staple, you could buy Gefilte Fish in a jar, or you could easily make your own (which has GOT to taste better, right?). My Jewish Learning lays out all the steps and ingredients – even identifying which type of fish works best for this recipe – making it super easy for you to execute at home.
Roasted Potatoes
Two different cooking methods contribute to the ultimate crispy-outside-tender-inside roasted potatoes. The Spruce Eats takes things in a Greek direction with the introduction of lemon, garlic, and oregano.
Roasted Chicken
Roasting a chicken is an affordable way to feed your family for the holiday or any other time of year! Ina Garten takes a potentially boring main dish and jazzes it up with the addition of herbs and other flavors, giving you the perfect centerpiece to your Passover meal.
Everyday Greens Salad
Pinch of Yum hits the mark for a super easy, super affordable, super delicious salad to lighten things up on your Passover table but doesn’t skimp on flavor with the dressing to go along with it.
Israeli-Style Hummus
The humble chickpea is not only insanely affordable, but also delicious when pureed with tahini, lemon, garlic, and a few other key ingredients to make hummus. Serve with your favorite raw veggies and pita chips (or matzo!) for dipping.
Mediterranean Quinoa Salad
For a vegetarian-friendly dish that’s easy to prepare and easy on the wallet, look no further than this salad from Delish.com. Fresh cucumbers, tomatoes, tangy feta, and a zippy dressing combine to form a bright salad that doesn’t compromise on flavor.
Potato Leek Kugel
Another vegetarian-friendly dish (it also happens to be gluten-free) for your Passover table, Epicurious’s take on a traditional kugel swaps noodles for potatoes. Leeks, a wonderful partner for potatoes, give this just enough of a flavor “oomph” to feel like something special.
Bonus: It’s not a holiday dinner without dessert, right? Here are two additional recipes to help you round out your Passover meal.
Coconut Macaroons
This recipe is the definition of simple. Add just one more step to coat these tasty bites in chocolate and you’ll hit a home run at your Seder.
Flourless Chocolate Cake
Very similar to a thick, super fudgy brownie, this cake will have everyone fighting over who gets the last bite. Topped with decadent chocolate ganache and tart raspberries, Delish.com has found the perfect way to close out your Passover meal.
