As we mark the 76th anniversary of International Credit Union® Day, it’s a moment to reflect on the profound impact credit unions like PSECU have had in shaping a more inclusive financial community. In a world that often feels divided, credit unions are about bringing people together by focusing on cooperation and shared goals. Our unwavering focus on PSECU members and putting people over profits is what sets us apart as a credit union and as a leader in financial services.
This October, as we celebrate both International Credit Union Day and Financial Planning Month, we’re reminded of the critical role financial literacy plays in building a secure future. Auditor General Tim DeFoor, a staunch advocate for financial literacy, recognizes the unique value that credit unions like PSECU bring to their communities.
“October’s Financial Planning Month is a timely reminder of the importance of financial literacy, as well as credit unions and why they exist,” said General Auditor DeFoor. “Credit unions like PSECU, with their unique member-centric approach, play a critical role in empowering individuals to make informed decisions that support their long-term financial health.”
Through his Be Money $mart initiative, Auditor General DeFoor has traveled across Pennsylvania, witnessing firsthand how credit unions like PSECU provide critical access to financial education. His efforts aim to ensure that Pennsylvanians have the tools and knowledge to build strong financial foundations - an objective that aligns perfectly with PSECU’s mission.
What is International Credit Union Day?
Since 1948, International Credit Union Day has been celebrated annually on the third Thursday of October. This global event serves as an opportunity to recognize the positive impact credit unions have had on individuals and communities worldwide.
Credit unions differ from traditional banks in that they are member-owned and driven by the mission to serve members rather than maximize profits for corporate stockholders. International Credit Union Day is our chance to acknowledge the lasting impact credit unions have had on communities worldwide by promoting financial inclusion, cooperation, and support for all. This year’s theme, “One World Through Cooperative Finance,” speaks to how credit unions and other community-based financial cooperatives are still bringing people together to grow financial inclusion and well-being for everyone.
The PSECU Difference
PSECU began with a simple yet powerful idea: financial services should be accessible, fair, and supportive for all the people they serve. For over 90 years, we’ve stayed true to this mission.
We’re more than just a financial institution; we’re a community of people helping people. Whether you’re a student opening your first account, a family purchasing a home, or someone planning for retirement, PSECU exists to support your financial journey. Because we put members first, we’re able to focus on what truly matters: helping people from different backgrounds and communities access the tools they need to succeed financially.
“PSECU and their unique member-centric approach allows for them to have a real pulse on their community and needs,” highlighted Auditor General DeFoor. “Offering a wide range of education tools with a member-driven mentality, credit unions empower individuals to make informed decisions that support their long-term financial health. PSECU offers tailored advice on building credit, managing debt, and saving for future milestones…again, all to empower their members! As I have said numerous times before, it is about building the next generation - the next generation of planners, consumers, and PSECU members that take advantage of the great benefits that credit unions have to offer!”
When you choose PSECU, you’re choosing to be a part of something larger than yourself. You’re becoming part of a community that’s dedicated to shared success and creating equal financial opportunities for everyone. Whether it’s through offering competitive rates on loans and savings, low- to no-fee products and services, convenient digital banking tools, or financial education, we take pride in giving back to our members. We believe in empowering members with the tools they need to make informed decisions and achieve their financial goals, and that’s a tradition we carry on proudly every day.
This International Credit Union Day, we encourage you to join us in celebrating the benefits of being a PSECU member and reflecting on the role we can all play in supporting our communities. Share the credit union difference with your friends and family, and invite them to join PSECU. Together, we can build a brighter financial future for all and achieve more than we could ever do alone.
